Food is medicine: Let’s talk about the saying “you are what you eat”

The long known saying “you are what you eat” was first used in English in the early 1900s. It refers to the idea that food controls a person’s health mentally and physically. The phrase gained popularity when it was adopted by the hippies as a slogan for healthy eating. The metaphorical expression implies that what someone eat’s could potentially effect their lives.

If you put healthy food into your body you generally feel healthy, and if you put junk food in your body you will not feel healthy. This is because these foods are the types of foods that can affect ones weight, and could also affect hair, organs, teeth, skin, and brain cells. “You are what you eat” means that to become healthy and fit, one needs to eat balanced and natural foods. While I believe this saying to be true, I think it could also be taken too literal. Along with eating healthy, high nutrient dense foods is the best for the body, it is important to consider portions and calories in vs calories out which I will go more in depth about in my next post. So that being said, if you eat a variety of life-sustaining, healthy and whole foods with balance, then your body will glow and you will feel better overall.

The human body is like a vehicle, if you don’t take care of it, it won't work the way you want it to. For instance, if you put the wrong oil in, or the wrong gas, the vehicle won’t run properly and it could potentially damage the vehicle. If you put foods that are highly processed and have high amounts of saturated fats, oils and added sugars, you are putting your body in risk of high-cholestoral, cancer and diseases. But, if you eat mostly nutrient-dense foods high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, such as meat, dairy, berries, green veggies, other fruits you are fueling your body to its best.
